During the penalty shootout stage of the match between Nigeria and South Africa at the African Cup of Nations, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) collapsed and died. The youth, identified as Samuel from Kaduna State, was serving in Adamawa state.
He fainted just before the last kick that secured Nigeria’s progress to the final. Samuel was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
According to witnesses, Samuel had expressed that he did not enjoy watching penalty shootouts before collapsing.
The NYSC Coordinator in Adamawa State confirmed the incident but did not have further details.
