The debate over the restructuring of Nigeria has been on for decades; countless professionals, politicians and statesmen have spoken and written for and against it. However, a restructured Nigeria has become more of a daydream for most Nigerians, whose survival and success is attached to a nation that truly works.
Since this article isn’t about providing technical arguments for restructuring, but a commonsensical case; I therefore intend to make my submission has quick as possible.
After recalling the manner of behaviour – both political and economical of most Nigerians, irrespective of social status. How we seem to “package” ourselves when with familiar faces; but care less about how we appear in a crowd. I then realize that the cause of corruption and underdevelopment in Nigeria is the unholy (unitary) form of Federal Government that we have presently.
Since the FCT is far from the villages of most Nigerians, an average Nigerian “packages” less in governmental responsibilities and behave anyhow – since no one is really watching. However, when we travel back to our villages, we simply behave like saints living above board.
If we therefore intend to arrest recklessness and corruption in government, we must take government to the territories of the people. Have we not noticed that it now easier to contest the Presidential race than to contest for local or state elections. People who have never been elected at the local level wants to become Nigeria’s President. If Nigeria isn’t restructured, we’ll soon have armed robbers and hired assassins vying for the Presidency.
Nigeria’s restructuring isn’t commonsensically a luxury, but a sure and glaring necessity. I rest my case!
