Solomon Dalung came to limelight in Nigeria when the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari made him the Sports and Youth Development Minister – despite his apparent lack of experience. He was expected to work very hard to develop youths in Nigeria, grow our sports and represent Mr President well in all matters that pertains to youths and sports.
The question in the mouth of most sports pundits is, “Is the Sport Minister really aware of his job?” Week in and week out, you hear news of him saying things they claim he did not fully think over before saying. The point is, what does he think he is paid monthly for?
The Super Falcons have laboured for months, preparing for the continental tournament, representing Nigeria. The truth is, these women made Nigeria proud; however, the man who is paid monthly to plan their growth and development has done little or nothing to prepare for them. The question then is, “How can sports grow and youths develop in Nigeria when the people who are already representing Nigeria are not honoured, respected and rewarded by the leadership of Nigeria?
Nigeria has been seen spending money of things important to the political class – their allowances paid, their living expenses taken cared of by the state and their families enjoying life. Yet, the real people representing Nigeria are left out in the cold. Just imagine the Sports Minister of Nigeria saying that the ministry does not have money to pay match bonuses! Are the officials of the ministries, agencies and parastatals under the ministry owed salaries and allowances?
I think Mr President should make a good decision over Mr Solomon Dalung. There is so much hunger in the land and the people who are in positions to help alleviate the standards of living of the people – youths, should not be seen messing around with their welfare. I rest my case for now!
