Sometime around October/November 2015, many Nigerians tagged President Muhammadu Buhari as ‘Baba-go-slow’. They gave him that name among other reasons because of his tendency to slow almost everything around him down to his own tempo.
Before he became President, Nigerian economy was tending towards recession and the security of the nation was getting out of hand. Assuming office on the mantra of change, most Nigerians expected him to kickoff his administration almost immediately; however, it took him about 6 months to have his government formed. By the way, many Nigerians now fault his choice of most of those people appointed into the Federal Cabinet.
He wasn’t in any haste to do anything, and he spent a good time away from the Presidential villa before relocating on the account of reasons best known to him. In fact, many experts are claiming that the economy could have been saved from going deep into full recession had he acted swiftly in getting the policy direction of his administration in place.
The question in my heart now is, “Will President Buhari become faster or slower if elected President again in 2019?” Perhaps you’re thinking maybe or maybe not, let me ask you to put the “law of diminishing returns” into consideration.
Apart from President Buhari not getting younger, he is equally not new – he is perhaps emotionally or psychologically tired to the problems of Nigeria; yet, he must politically seek reelection. Do you then think Mr President would become faster or slower if elected in 2019 when he would be 77 years of age (officially)?
