A political ripple turned into a tempest on Tuesday when the Sokoto chapter of ALGON (Association of Local Governments of Nigeria) categorically disowned a statement suggesting support for Senator Aliyu Wamakko as Tinubu’s 2027 running mate.
The source of the storm? Alhaji Abdullahi Yarima, ALGON’s secretary and Chairman of Kebbe LGA, had called for Wamakko’s nomination. But the State ALGON Chairman, Alhaji Abba Shehu Tambuwal, dismissed Yarima’s remarks as “his personal opinion.”
Tambuwal insisted ALGON has not discussed any 2027 alignments and warned members against issuing politically sensitive statements without due process. “This is premature and misleading,” he said. “Senator Wamakko has not declared any intent.”
Political analysts see the incident as early tremors in what may become a heated contest for Tinubu’s succession plan. Wamakko remains a heavyweight in Sokoto politics and a close ally of President Tinubu, but an official endorsement appears far off.
ALGON’s move, though reactive, underscores a deepening caution among regional political actors as the 2027 race casts its long shadow.
