The leadership transition at Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa State, has caused controversy within the institution. Dr Abdullahi Alhassan Ahmed, the former Rector, handed over to Dr Obarakpo Samuel James as overseer, which has raised questions about the legality of the process.
The Federal Polytechnic Act 2019, as amended, mandates that the former rector should have handed over to the most senior person, who would act in an interim capacity until a substantive administrator is appointed by the Federal Ministry of Education.
Ahmed is accused of appointing Dr James as overseer, contrary to the stipulations of the Act. This move has generated discontent among top officials within the institution and led to tension.
Some speculate that the former rector’s actions may be motivated by a desire to remain in power, potentially for a six-month acting mandate.
Benjamin Bem-Goong, the Director of Press in the Federal Ministry of Education, dismissed the idea of an overseer, stating that such a designation does not exist in the Federal Polytechnic Act.
The former rector, Dr Abdullahi Alhassan Ahmed, denies the allegations and dismisses them as unfounded claims.
