This is the second part of our discussion on the new wave of slavery in our time. In the first part(Refugee Migration: The New Wave of Slavery In 21st Century Pt.2), we saw how slavery was fought by men and women across culture, race and religion. While many people have long slept over the matter of slavery; quite a number of mischievous people across the world are bent on achieving the revival of such act of terror against humanity.
While many people hold the ideology of the “Survival of the fittest” very dearly, it is important that we realize the weaknesses or the errors of the ideology. Survival of the fittest is a phrase that originated from Darwinian evolutionary theory as a way of describing the mechanism of natural selection. The biological concept of fitness is defined as reproductive success. In Darwinian terms the phrase is best understood as “Survival of the form that will leave the most copies of itself in successive generations.”
It has been claimed that “the survival of the fittest” theory in biology was interpreted by late 19th century capitalists as “an ethical precept that sanctioned cut-throat economic competition” and led to the advent of the theory of “social Darwinism” which was used to justify laissez-faire economics, war and racism. However, these ideas predate and commonly contradict Darwin’s ideas, and indeed their proponents rarely invoked Darwin in support.
The point is, in a bid to survive, many people believe that they must deny others of any means of meaningful survival. Many nations have been thrown into crisis simply to enable some powerful nations to remain peaceful. From the Middle-East to Africa, there are few nations without crises or war. The question is, “Are these nations the only nations that could fight; or there are some invisible hands that provoke these crises across the nations?” If there are nations that instigate groups within nations against one another, the question then is, “To what end?” While I may not proffer the exclusive list of the intent of these nations; I may suggest a few:
- Access To Natural Resources
- Steady Supply Of Cheap & Desperate Labour Force
- Steady Market for their manufactured products
To save money, invest & produce in any place or nation; there must be peace. Peace, which is indispensable for meaningful development is the scarcest entity in Africa and the Middle East right now. Since the people are not living in peace; therefore, they can’t save for the future, they can’t invest and they can’t produce. If these people can’t produce; then, they must consume what we produce!
Many Africa nations including my country Nigeria, don’t actually have problem being creative; however, to execute or implement your creative thoughts, you require peace, safety and capital – all of which are non-existent in Africa; safe the developed nations of Europe and America.
As the people can’t get what they need to lead meaningful lives; they make attempts to run to these developed countries, not always as investors, but as MIGRANTS! The issue with them being made migrants is the closeness between being migrants and being slaves. Many migrants in Europe today are hardly different from slaves and are often treated as such.
While many people fought for the abolishing of slavery in the open market; many Africans and Middle Easterners are begging as it were to become “slaves” for their survival in the 21st century of crises, war and underdevelopment.
I rest my case for now!
