The Social Democratic Party (SDP) plunged into crisis on Tuesday as its National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, was suspended over allegations of massive financial misconduct.
According to a statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Araba Aiyenigba, Gabam—alongside National Auditor Nnadi Clarkson and National Youth Leader Chukwuma Uchechukwu—was linked to unauthorized transactions and personal enrichment schemes that allegedly diverted party funds running into hundreds of millions of naira.
The tipping point?
Gabam reportedly submitted an unapproved financial statement to INEC and made unauthorized newspaper disclosures. Aiyenigba noted that law enforcement agencies have been alerted, with an interim panel set up for forensic auditing.
The damage control began swiftly. Deputy National Chairman (North), Sadiq Abubakar, has been appointed Acting Chairman. But within the ranks, anxiety runs high. Party insiders fear the scandal may cripple the SDP’s 2027 election strategy.
Gabam, known for his flamboyant populism, is yet to issue a formal response. Analysts say the party’s move signals a stronger anti-corruption tone, but whether it will restore public confidence remains to be seen
