Cases of gender-based violence, particularly spousal battery and rape, are increasing in Nigeria, despite the enactment of the Violent Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law. Women are the hardest hit, with 35% experiencing violence at some point in their lives.
In Akwa Ibom State, there have been 321 cases of sexual and gender-based violence between January and November 2023. Victims often withdraw their complaints due to societal pressure or fear. The recent case of a lawyer in Akwa Ibom State who was seen in a viral video battering his wife highlights the reluctance of some victims to pursue justice.
The problem lies in the implementation of the law and the victims’ withdrawal at the middle of investigations. Experts call for a clampdown on spousal abusers and urge victims to seek justice instead of forgiveness.
