Who Will Save Nigeria from Economic Woes?

There is a saying that, “if one cannot beat them, one should join them”. The pathetic side of that saying is that, you can never beat them again if you ever join them. Nigeria is going through many waters today; while the situation did not just appear; the need for change is perceived by most people to be pressing. The question many people are however asking daily is, “Who Will Save Nigeria from this Predicament?”

Many people could quickly say that All Progressive Congress (APC) will safe Nigeria; while some may say, the Legislature – National Assembly members will save Nigeria. Some still would agree that the salvation of Nigerians is in the hands of the Judiciary. While all that may be possible or true; I would want to caution the excitement of simplicity of most Nigerians.

Newton’s first law of motion describes inertia. According to this law, a body at rest tends to stay at rest, and a body in motion tends to stay in motion, unless acted on by a net external force. Implying that the state of Nigeria’s economy may maintain status quo until external forces are engaged. The government of Nigeria is divided into three arms – the Executive arm, the Legislative arm and the Judicial arm; each arm serving as checks on the other and each arm fulfilling its function as an entity.

One thing that an average Nigerian must know is that, babies don’t tell their mothers to stop giving them breast milk; it is the mothers that withdraw the milk gradually from their babies – they do this to have more strength, time and resources to fulfill other roles the family and the society places on them. The point is, most Politicians (Executive & Legislature) are not disposed to handing over any privilege or right to anybody; Politicians would want to lay a permanent hold onto power, money and fame as long as they leave. However, it is expected of their people, which the constitution provides with the ultimate power to relief any politician of any right or privilege hitherto given.

What I am saying is simple, the salvation of Nigerians is not in any political party or politician; the salvation of Nigeria cannot possibly be in their hands – since they derive more from Nigeria’s economic woes. Imagine a situation where Nigerian politicians refuse to invest their monies in Nigeria; but travel as far as Panama, Venezuela, Ivory Coast, Niger and any other nation to invest their monies (the ones they made legitimately and the ones stolen). When such Politicians set up refineries outside the Nigeria; they work so hard to frustrate the local refineries; the ones that invest in the importation and sales of Generators, work so hard to frustrate power availability in the country. Yet, Nigerians sometimes look up to the same politicians for help to revamp the ailing industries or refineries – they will not do anything!

The salvation of Nigeria is actually in the hands of Nigerians; and the biggest responsibility of Nigerians is the smooth administration, investigation and monitoring of the elected and appointed public office holders. Already, many people in United Kingdom are calling for the resignation of the Prime Minister, whose cousin was named in the Panama Papers, and the Prime Minister of Iceland has resigned. I am only hoping to see more Nigerians speak out over this matter – calling for impeachment and resignation of any corrupt politician in Nigeria.

What stops any Politician accused of corruption from resigning position even before indictment by the law court? I think is the low level of emancipation of Nigerians. Until Nigerians wake up to their responsibility of stopping corruption; corruption will continue to stop many Nigerians from fulfilling their ambitions or visions. I rest my case for now!
