Billionaire businessman and Managing Director of Aiteo Group, Mr. Benedict Peters, who was on Monday declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says he is not on the run.
Peters, who was accused of giving $60m kickbacks to a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, and engaging in dubious crude oil swap deals, said he was out of the country for health reasons and would return soon.
In a statement by Mr. Sola Omole, Aiteo’s spokesman and its Director for Media and Public Affairs, he expressed considerable surprise at the development.
He confirmed that the EFCC had been, on occasions, in contact with lawyers acting for Peters who advised the commission that Peters has been abroad for medical reasons.
He indicated that in May 2016, medical reports to confirm the claim had been provided by Peters to the EFCC with a request to defer a meeting that they had sought with him until late August or early September.
The statement read in part, “The commission duly acknowledged this request and that period has not lapsed. Additionally, the commission has yet to formally respond to the request or made any other effort to rearrange the meeting.”
