Sequel to the poor results posted by Osun State pupils in the 2015 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, the state branch, National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria, has commenced afternoon coaching for pupils in all middle and high schools across the state.
The Acting Secretary and Public Relations Officer of the association in the state, Mr. Akinlolu Fadare, who confirmed this in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Thursday, said the initiative was to improve the academic performance of the pupils in internal and external examinations.
It would be recalled that the West African Examinations Council said the state placed 29 out of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in the 2015 WASSCE.
But Fadare said the coaching, which commenced this term, was specifically targeted at high school pupils who would be writing external examinations.
“NAPTAN, under the leadership of Comrade Bisi Olaniyan, is currently coaching throughout all middle and high school pupils in our state with a view to enhancing, improving and promoting the performances of all our children both in internal and external examinations. We believe that the government should not be left to do it all,’’ he said.
On how the programme has been funded, Olaniyan said, “That is an internal arrangement. We are not here to work against the government.’’
Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the association, Mr. Haruna Danjuma, in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Thursday, said the association had been split into two factions in the state. Danjuma said he had yet to know the reasons behind the development.
He said, “There are two factions of the association in the state and the two attended our last council meeting. I told them they should not attend our meeting until a delegation was sent to them to resolve the matter. I sent the two factions out of the meeting,’’ he said.
