The Bishop of the Diocese of Badagry (Anglican Communion), Rt. Rev Babatunde Adeyemi, says government can generate more revenue from the agricultural and solid mineral sectors as alternatives to oil.
Adeyemi stated this during his yearly bishop’s charge at the third session of the Fourth Synod of the Badagry Diocese entitled, ‘My Yoke’, taken from Matthew 11:28-30.
The bishop, who commended the government for its plan to revamp the economy, pointed out that diversification from the oil sector to agriculture and solid minerals would help to restore the dwindling economy.
He said, “However, the government as a matter of urgency should cushion the effect of the recent fuel hike on the people by designing palliative measures to give reliefs.
“The fight against corruption should include making governance effective and efficient. The rise in crime rate, including armed robbery, kidnapping, herdsmen attacks, terrorism and cultism, should be curbed through improvement in existing structures for checkmating crimes.”
Adeyemi urged the government to motivate law enforcement agencies for optimum service delivery and condemned domestic violence against women and children, saying that offenders should be punished, while victims should get proper counselling.
While commending the government on the ongoing expansion of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, the bishop also pleaded that the government paid attention to the Okokomaiko and Badagry areas.
