The European Union (EU) has pledged an investment of €18 million to support vaccine research in Nigeria. The funding will be used to enhance research in vaccines by providing grants to public research institutions and other implementing partners.
The investment is part of a larger initiative called Team Europe, which aims to promote vaccine manufacturing in Africa.
The EU is working closely with Bulgaria on this initiative and will provide funding and expertise in vaccine research and development.
The Ambassador of Bulgaria to Nigeria expressed his country’s commitment to the project and its willingness to provide funding and share its expertise in research, development, and implementation of vaccines.
The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare in Nigeria emphasized the urgency of local vaccine production and expressed gratitude for the support from the EU and Bulgaria.
Currently, less than one percent of vaccines used in Nigeria are produced domestically, and the national plan aims to address this issue by promoting local vaccine production.
The plan outlines strategies for promoting vaccine research and development, reducing vaccine hesitancy, improving vaccine access, and shifting towards local production in both public and private health sectors.
The National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development in Nigeria developed the plan with support from the EU and the Bulgarian Government.
The EU’s investment reflects its alignment with Nigeria’s priorities in vaccine research and development. The funding will contribute to the development of a sustainable, long-term partnership between the EU, Bulgaria, and Nigeria in the health sector.
