The United States Secretary of State John Kerry will embark on a two-day visit to Nigeria from August 23 to 24 to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari.
During the visit, Kerry will engage in discussions with Buhari on counterterrorism efforts, economy, fight against corruption and human rights issues.
According to a statement by John Kirby, the U.S. Department of State spokesperson, Kerry will also visit Sokoto State to deliver a speech on religious tolerance as a tool to fight terrorism.
He’s said, “The Secretary will travel to Sokoto and Abuja, Nigeria from the 23rd to the 24th of August. There he will meet with President Buhari to discuss counterterrorism efforts, the Nigerian economy, the fight against corruption, and human rights issues.
“In Sokoto, the Secretary will deliver a speech on the importance of resilient communities and religious tolerance in countering violent extremism. And while he’s in Abuja, he’ll meet with a group of adolescent girls who are working to change community perceptions that devalue the role of girls in society. He’ll also have a chance to meet with northern governors and religious leaders.”
