The Akwa Ibom State Police Command and other security stakeholders have called for collaborative efforts among different security agencies to tackle insecurity in the state.
The security meeting was summoned on the heels of security crisis in the Niger Delta region caused by increased militancy, insurgency, herdsmen attacks and other criminalities.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Murtala Mani, who presided over the forum, said on Thursday that owing to the volatility of the security environment, there was need for different interest groups to work with one agendum towards addressing the security situation in the state.
Mani said that since no meaningful development could take place in an atmosphere of insecurity, the state and the general public must work together to ensure that adequate security was entrenched for business growth and the expansion of frontiers for leisure.
The town hall meeting was attended by top security officers, the executive and legislative arms of the government, traditional and religious leaders, leaders of ethnic groups; youths, women leaders, among others.
Mani, however, said there was a “marginal” reduction in major crimes like armed robbery, stealing and burglary, stating that control measures had to be established so that it would be impossible for criminals to perpetrate their evil acts without being detected.
The CP also called for support from members of the public in crime detection and prevention in the state, while he decried attacks on security operatives in the course of discharging their duties.
According to him, while security works to ensure a better society in terms of crime control, he however said that members of the public were expected to avail the police of intelligence information.
