The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Ekiti State, Prof. Kayode Soremekun, has urged Nigerian universities to devise means of generating revenue as well as focusing on job creation.
Noting that the current economy situation in the country called for tertiary institutions to go into other business ventures, Soremekun said FUOYE would capitalise on the peculiar environmental conditions of its host town to establish a mechanised farm.
The VC spoke in Oye Ekiti while inaugurating a seven-man committee for the establishment of the Faculty of Pharmacy in the university.
He said, “When I came on board, I realised that the university was sitting on a goldmine. The town’s good soil and expansive land are things we can explore for mechanised farming. Through this, we can provide more employment and ensure that we attain food security.
“President Muhammadu Buhari is looking for alternative ways to provide employment for jobless graduates and other productive Nigerians. Therefore, universities, as engine rooms of growth, must key into this agenda.”
The head of the committee and Professor of Pharmacy from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State, Adebayo Lamikanra, said the convocation of the group was to prepare grounds for the smooth take off of the faculty.
