The Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) has called for the strict implementation of regulations regarding the importation and handling of explosives in the mining sector.
This comes in response to an explosion in Ibadan on January 16th, which killed five people, injured 77 others, and destroyed 58 buildings.
The President of NMGS, Prof Akinade Olatunji, stated that adherence to the regulations could have prevented the incident.
He called for the involvement of stakeholders such as the Mines Inspectorate Department, the Directorate of State Security, and the anti-bomb squad of the Nigerian Police Force to ensure the proper implementation of regulations.
Furthermore, Olatunji emphasized the importance of punishing those who do not comply with mining regulations in order to deter illegal miners and improper storage of explosives.
