The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria and the Nigeria Union of Teachers are collaborating to ensure a transparent teacher registration exercise in the country.
According to the TRCN, the collaboration will also ensure that the National Universities Commission does not accredit courses in the faculty of education in the nation’s universities without the input of the council.
A statement on Thursday by the Head of Information and Public Relations in TRCN, Olumuyiwa Ojewuyi, said the council’s Registrar/Chief Executive, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, stated this during a visit to the NUT President, Michael Alogba-Olukoya.
Reiterating the need to rid the teaching profession of the presence of quacks, Ajiboye noted that the collaboration between the TRCN and NUT would go a long way in repositioning the profession in the country
He said, “Teachers are nation builders. We teach, others learn. Our profession should be a front burner and others should follow. The TRCN is NUT’s baby and the baby must not die a stillbirth.
“We want to make sure that we re-launch ourselves such that there would no longer be accreditation of faculties of education by the NUC, without TRCN’s representatives being part of such an accreditation team.
“There is the need for all agencies and parastatals under the Federal Ministry of Education to work in unity towards revamping the sector. We are now more focused on how to positively reposition teaching in Nigeria and that is why we have come to solicit the support of NUT.”
According to him, the TRCN will work with the NUT towards moving the profession forward.
Olukoya, who described TRCN and NUT as “Siamese twins”, added that both agencies needed to work together in the interest of the profession.
He said, “We need to confront our issues frontally. The revenue is there and we have to work for it. We need to work more in the area of teacher registration, certification, licensing and awareness. The TRCN and NUT should put in place a high-powered standing committee to work out the modalities for the renewed partnership between the two bodies.”
